It’s that time of year again. January 1st marks the start of a new year, a time to start practicing what you preach by working toward your respective resolutions. This may be difficult when you’re waking up to a headache and what feels like perpetual post-holiday food coma. So you had one too many champagne flutes and made a few questionable decisions- like having your Uber make a pit-stop at the McDonald’s drive-through for a snack size Oreo McFlurry. Regret nothing.

While old habits die hard, the good news is it’s never too late to get back on a healthy eating track. New year, new you. And what better time to start working toward your fitness goals than first of the month with these simple healthy practices.

1. As the old proverb goes, “Beer before liquor, never been sicker. Liquor before beer, you’re in the clear. ” Excessive amounts of either/or and your liver is done for.

As the primary organ of detoxification, the liver plays a major role in processing alcohol and detoxifying the blood. When you overload your body with heavy drinking, your liver is forced to work overtime which may result in the inflammation of the liver, destruction of liver cells, permanent scarring, and cancer. The compound Silymarin found in the powerful natural herb dubbed “Milk Thistle,” aids in enzyme production, the increase of bile formation and decrease of inflammation- proving to be a great way to detoxify the liver and help in regenerating injured liver cells to prevent future complications.

2. Water for Days. Add some lemon for a little metabolism boost.

Quintessential to any Detox Diet, an increased amount of water consumption is a great starter to fighting dehydration and flushing out toxins. The rule of thumb is that you should aim to drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily.

3. Sweat it out.

The thought of getting on a treadmill and doing some interval running may seem like the last thing you want to be doing right now, but sweating is an instant way for you to detoxify your body. High intensity interval training allows you to pick up your heart rate, while kickstarting your metabolism. Go for a run, get into the gym, or hit the sauna to naturally flush out toxins.

4. Three words. Activated. Charcoal. Lemonade.

Once you get past the unusual black liquid color, Activated Charcoal Lemonade is a great start to doing some damage control after weeks of binge eating and excessive drinking. The charcoal absorbs toxins from the GI tract and its magical properties not only cure hangovers, but also brighten skin and boost energy levels.

5. Juice, juice, juice.

Juicing is a sure-fire way to recharge and reboot your system after weeks of neglecting your body. Be sure to include the fab five: kale, parsley, turmeric, ginger, and apple. Kale regulates enzymes that detoxify the liver; Parsley aids in the production of bile needed for detoxification; turmeric contains anti-inflammatory compounds and powerful antioxidants; ginger is a rich source of antioxidants that can improve digestion; apple contains quercitin which helps up-regulate detoxifying enzymes and also contains fiber to promote bowel movements.
