Even for the best of friends, achieving roommate harmony can take a little work.

1. Establish ground rules.

Before deciding to move in together, see if you can agree to abide by the same ground rules. What will your cleaning schedule be like? Will you share groceries? Not everyone has the same idea when it comes to sharing a living space. Make sure you and your partner/friend are on the same page.

2. Talk things through.

Your roommate isn’t a mind reader! If something’s bothering you, you need to be able to talk it out.

3. Set bill reminders.

Not paying your bills on time is bad for your credit and bad for your relationship with your roomie. Work out a schedule of how you’re going to split the bill on utilities, and set up reminds so that you both keep up with it!

4. Let your roommate know if they should be expecting company.

Unless it’s your birthday, you probably don’t want to come home surprised to see a group of people at your place. Having guests over is fine, of course, but give your roommate a heads up!

5. Buy a pair of headphones.

Even if you have the same taste in music and watch the same movies, chances are you’re each going to need some quiet time. Invest in a pair of headphones to avoid unnecessary arguments about noise.

Living with roommates isn’t always easy, but it can also be an incredible experience! Be mindful of others and always remember that communication is key.
