Many Americans woke up this morning in complete shock over the results of the 2016 presidential election. If you’ve been active on social media, you probably have seen the term “calexit” thrown around quite frequently today. The term emerged as many Californians expressed their desire to secede from the United States after Trump’s win.

California is as blue as it gets, so you might understand its frustration with so many states going red this year. Clinton was the overwhelming favorite in CA, and all 55 of its electoral college votes went to her. Next, Californians turned their eyes to swing states, hoping to see similar outcomes and were left disappointed. They tweeted their disapproval, and the #calexit hashtag began trending
