The closing ceremony, of course, unfortunately meant the end of these exciting Rio Games, but it also shifted the public’s attention to Tokyo 2020. Sunday’s show gave the world a taste of what to expect in Japan, with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe appearing as Mario from Nintendo’s famous Super Mario franchise.
Shinzo Abe appeared at the Rio Games via a green drainpipe, a form of travel made famous by the Super Mario Brothers, where he greeted the stunned crowd. His entrance followed a video of scenes from Tokyo highlighting athletes and various characters from Japanese pop culture, including Hello Kitty and manga character Doraemon.

There’s no doubt that Japan is going to put on an impressive show at its own opening ceremony, so we’re definitely looking forward to Tokyo 2020.
